Ascension FrigatebirdAscension Frigatebird (Fregata aquila). The male has a bright red throatpatch that can be inflated in courtship display. The female has a light (sometimes white) belly.

RANGE: on and around Ascension Island only.

When I approached Ascension on board the RMS Saint Helena I was surprised to see the first one about two hours before I saw the island! Interestingly, Frigatebirds can't swim.
