Bird catching gardenThe famous bird catching garden (German Fanggarten) on Heligolan'd Upper Land. Many birds are caught and ringed here - or registered when they have a ring already. For example, in spring and autumn many wandering birds - on route between their winter and summer residencies - are caught here.
Nazi bunker systemBefore and during the Second World War the Nazis built many bunkers on the island: a few are open to guided excursions nowadays.
Straits of HeligolandThe Straits of Heligoland in the tourist season, to the south and east of the main island, with passenger ships bringing in many daytrippers.

traditional fisher's hutts (1)In the left we see traditional fisher's hutts in many colours in the South Harbour, in German called Hummerbuden, literally meaning "Lobster Hutts", nowadays used as tourist accomodations, shops, restaurants, etc. Further to the right we see "normal" houses and other buildings in both Lower Village and Upper Village.
